Is solar still worth buying in California in 2026?
Some homes can make a strong case for it; others have a costly roof, difficult shade, low electricity use or a short ownership horizon. A single statewide payback number conceals those differences. Evaluate an actual system against your household’s use and the tariff at that address.
Ask for three annual cash-flow comparisons: no installation, solar alone, and solar with storage. Use the full installed price and current incentive eligibility, then include financing, remaining utility bills and a maintenance allowance. Repeat the calculation with lower savings and an earlier home sale. An offer should remain understandable when optimistic assumptions are removed.

Record panel quantity and DC capacity, inverter model and AC output, forecast annual production, battery usable capacity and power, backed-up circuits, roof work, electrical work, permits and the complete cash price. List exclusions beside the total.
Then ask each bidder to explain what the other proposals include that theirs does not. A cheaper quote may omit the hardware needed for backup, while a more expensive one may simply contain a large financing markup. Keep the equipment comparison separate from the loan comparison so one attractive monthly payment cannot obscure either.

Kilowatts, or kW, describe power at a moment. Kilowatt-hours, or kWh, describe energy over time. A 6 kW system operating at that output for one hour would generate 6 kWh; real output changes throughout the day. Battery capacity in kWh and battery output in kW answer different questions as well.
When a proposal says 100% offset, ask what is being offset: last year’s electricity use, modeled future use, or the bill in dollars. Request the underlying annual kWh numbers. A percentage without a defined baseline cannot tell you how much electricity will be purchased at night or what charges will remain.
Should I size the system for a future EV, heat pump or home addition?
Model plausible future loads separately from the household you have today. For an EV, use expected driving and charging behavior. For heating, use a contractor’s building-specific estimate rather than replacing a gas bill with a guessed electrical load. Also consider efficiency work that could reduce demand.
Ask for a present-use design and a future-use alternative, with the incremental cost and monthly production shown. Check whether later expansion would affect interconnection or a legacy tariff. Buying the largest array that fits can leave you paying for surplus energy with little value, but an undersized electrical design can make a planned addition expensive.

They may be using different roof images, tree assumptions, equipment or definitions of an acceptable return. A preliminary aerial layout cannot settle every question about seasonal shade or roof condition. Ask each installer to show monthly production by roof plane and the loss assumed from obstructions.
Compare those assumptions with an on-site assessment and current photographs. Request an option using only the stronger roof areas; more modules can increase total output while making the last few modules a poor purchase. Do not approve tree removal based only on a sales rendering, particularly when the tree belongs to someone else.

Conventional panels can be easier to compare when a sound roof is staying in place. The alternatives perform different amounts of roofing work, so price per solar watt alone is an incomplete comparison.
Ask how much of the roof generates electricity, which materials provide weather protection, and how a failed generating section is replaced. Obtain separate descriptions of electrical and roofing warranties. Include future access, compatible replacement parts and the availability of trained service providers in the decision.

Not by itself. The array’s DC nameplate and the inverter’s AC rating are different specifications. Designing more panel capacity than inverter capacity can be deliberate because an array spends much of the year below its laboratory rating. The tradeoff includes energy clipped during high-output periods.
Ask for the modeled annual energy lost to clipping and the cost of reducing that loss. Compare the extra usable energy with the extra equipment cost under your tariff. A flat production peak merits an explanation, but it does not, by itself, prove either a defect or an economical reason to replace the inverter.
What should I challenge in a solar savings forecast?
Ask which inputs drive the result: starting electricity price, annual price increases, export compensation, future household use, production losses, battery replacement and financing costs. Identify the year in which cumulative savings are claimed to repay the purchase. Confirm whether that calculation includes costs paid outside the installer’s contract.
Request a second forecast that holds utility rates constant and reduces expected production. This is a sensitivity check, not a prediction that rates will stay flat. If the proposal only works with rapid annual rate increases or an incentive you cannot claim, the promised return is carrying more uncertainty than the headline shows.
