Why does my system never reach the kW rating in the proposal?
Panel nameplate capacity is measured under defined test conditions. The output shown by a home monitoring system reflects actual sunlight, module temperature, orientation, shading, electrical losses and inverter limits. It also matters whether the screen shows solar generation, power entering the house or net export.
Start with the proposal’s expected monthly energy in kWh and compare it with measured production over the same period. Ask the installer to explain a persistent shortfall after accounting for weather and downtime. One disappointing noon reading is weak evidence, but so is a blanket claim that every shortfall is “normal” without examining the data.
How can I tell normal inverter clipping from a production fault?
A flat upper edge on otherwise clear production curves can be consistent with an inverter reaching its output limit. That pattern needs to be compared with the installed AC rating and any export limit. Sudden shutdowns, missing sections or repeated error messages raise different questions.
Save a week of curves, the equipment list and any alerts. Ask the installer to quantify annual energy affected and compare it with the model supplied at sale. Replacing equipment should be justified by expected recovered energy or a diagnosed defect, not by the appearance of a single graph.
Is a large drop in winter solar production normal?
Seasonal changes in daylight, sun angle, weather and shading can substantially change production. A summer daily total is a poor benchmark for a winter bill. Trees or nearby buildings can shade the array differently as the sun sits lower, and household heating may increase demand at the same time.
Compare actual results with the model for that month and, when available, the same season in earlier years. Separate a weather-related change from a step change following an equipment fault or building work. Ask for a documented review if the gap persists; neither summer overproduction nor a winter shortfall alone establishes the system’s annual performance.
Can microinverters make a heavily shaded roof worthwhile?
Module-level electronics can change how a system responds when different modules receive different light. They cannot recover sunlight that never reaches the cells. A claim that particular electronics “solve shade” still needs a production model and a financial comparison for the actual roof.
Ask the bidder to show the shaded and less-shaded sections separately, with the same weather and tariff assumptions. Compare a smaller array on better roof planes with the proposed full layout. The decision should reflect useful annual energy and repair access as well as equipment architecture. Brand preference is not a substitute for a credible site assessment.
Why does my monitoring app show consumption rising exactly with solar production?
A consumption trace that closely copies the solar curve can indicate a measurement or configuration problem. Enphase’s installer updates specifically discuss incorrectly configured consumption current transformers, or CTs. These sensors measure current; an incorrect setup can make an attractive dashboard misleading.
Save screenshots showing the unusual pattern and ask the installer to validate the metering configuration against a known load and the actual wiring. Have a qualified person do that work. Do not open electrical equipment or move sensors yourself. Avoid making expensive battery or tariff decisions from consumption data that has not yet been confirmed.

What should I do when one panel or part of the array stops reporting?
First distinguish missing data from missing generation. A communications interruption can remove a reading without proving that the equipment has stopped producing. Conversely, a normal-looking system total can conceal a smaller fault. Compare the affected area with its own prior readings and with nearby modules under similar conditions.
Record the time the problem started, any error message and recent roof or electrical work. Give the service provider the equipment identifiers and request a diagnosis with the repair scope. Do not disconnect rooftop connectors to investigate. Ask how the system will be checked after repair and how any applicable production guarantee treats the downtime.
